"Worlds on the Edge" for trumpet/Flugelhorn, trombone, and vibraphone by Howard J. Buss was written during 2025 for the Balaton Chamber Brass (Amy Cherry, trumpet; and Dan Cherry trombone) and percussionist Ralph Sorrentino. (The vibraphonist also plays a suspended cymbal in the final movement.) The title refers to the unique binary dwarf planet system of Pluto and Charon and their moons. Based on a trove of data from NASA’s New Horizons mission of 2015, scientists speculate that billions of years ago Pluto and Charon briefly touched and stuck together. They then separated and began orbiting one another. In astronomy this is referred to as “kiss and capture.” The heat generated during the encounter may have been a significant factor in the creation of Pluto’s heart-shaped plain, the Tombaugh Regio. The irregular-shaped, icy moons, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra, orbit the binary dwarf planet system of Pluto and Charon. Kerberos is a double-lobed moon, suggesting the fusion of two once-separate bodies. The four movements are:

II. From the Heart (Pluto)
III. Icy Reflections Afar (Nix, Styx, and Hydra)
IV. Fused (Kerberos)

Total performance time: approximately 14:30

From the composer: The music of "Worlds on the Edge" is highly structured to reflect the elegant and complex “clockwork” of the orbits of the binary planets, Pluto and Charon, and their four outer moons. At the same time, I wanted to account for the anthropomorphic descriptions given to certain features of the system. The music is predominantly dodecaphonic and the tone row is employed strictly in many places. However, in the second movement, “From the Heart,” and the second half of the final movement, “Fused,” I took liberties with the row to smooth out its edginess and give the music a more romantic feel.

It is in 3 movements: In Remembrance 9/11/01, Repercussions, and Renewal. SPECTRUM (2015) for bass clarinet and percussion quartet was written for clarinetist Dr. Keith Koons and the University of Central Florida Percussion Ensemble. The structure of this work is suggestive of a journey through a sequence of colorful sonic landscapes. It is a showcase for the bass clarinet as well as the percussion ensemble. The music uses the entire practical range of the bass clarinet, exploring its impressive array of expressive capabilities. Howard J. Buss (b. 1951) - The compositions of Howard J. Buss have received critical acclaim and have been
performed in more than 50 countries. His more than 300 published works include instrumental solos, chamber music, symphonic, choral, and band works. His music has received numerous awards and his commissioned works include original compositions as well as arrangements.

Buss' music is frequently featured at national and international music conventions and festivals. Faculty and student musicians from universities as well as current and former members of organizations such as the Atlanta Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, U.S. Army Field Band, Vancouver Symphony, etc. have performed them. A copy of his patriotic band composition "Fanfares" is included in the Presidential Collection of Ronald Reagan.

His music is recorded on the Albany, Bottega Discantica (Italy), Crystal, Capstone, De Ferrari (Italy), DUX (Poland), Equilibrium, 4-Tay, Granada Brass (Spain), HoneyRock, IBS Classical (Spain), PL Productions, C. Alan Publications, Urania (Italy) and Ravello labels, and on many digital albums. His music is published by Brixton Publications (Cimarron Music Press,) Subito Music, and Smith Publications.

Howard J. Buss received his B. A. in Applied Music from West Chester University, M. M. in Performance and M. M. in Composition from Michigan State University, and D.M.A. in Composition from the University of Illinois. Jazzical #8 “Four Synergies” for flute, cello, and marimba by Howard J. Buss was composed during the summer and fall of 2025. This work may be played on a 4-octave marimba. The percussionist has a choice to read from the score or the marimba part. The mallets to be used are left to the discretion of the performer.

Often the technical and spiritual elements that determine a particular musical style overlap with the traits of other styles. I have always been interested in the fine line(s) that can separate one style of music from another. Many of my compositions over the years explore and celebrate the similarities and differences among musical styles. For example, my Capriccio for clarinet, trombone and percussion includes an extended section of twelve-tone Dixieland; Mysterious Exit for flute and percussion ensemble combines elements of Hopi social dance songs with serialism; and, Traditions for violin, clarinet, guitar, and string bass is a synthesis of elements of Klezmer music with those from mainstream Western concert music.

In the case of Jazzical #8 for flute, cello and marimba, elements of modern classical music and jazz are juxtaposed in a way to sometimes blur the lines between the styles. The “#8” in the title recognizes the kindred predecessors of this composition: Three Jazzicals, (published in versions for trumpet and tuba, clarinet and tuba, and soprano sax and tuba,) Jazzical #4 for horn, trombone, tuba, and piano, Jazzical #5 for euphonium, tuba and piano, Jazzical #6 in versions for solo alto sax and sax quartet, and solo alto sax and piano; Jazzical #7 “Latin Vibes” for string quartet, piano, bass, and drums; and Jazzical #8 for violin, alto sax, and marimba.

Jazzical #8 “Four Synergies” for violin, alto saxophone, and marimba by Howard J. Buss was composed during the fall of 2025 for Drs. Rachael Fischer, violin; Stephen Fischer, alto sax; and Todd Mueller, marimba. It was premiered by these artists on April 6, 2026 at Georgia Gwinnet College in Lawrenceville, Georgia. This work may be played on a 4-octave marimba. The percussionist has a choice to read from the score or the marimba part. The mallets to be used are left to the discretion of the performer.

Often the technical and spiritual elements that determine a particular musical style overlap with the traits of other styles. I have always been interested in the fine line(s) that can separate one style of music from another. Many of my compositions over the years explore and celebrate the similarities and differences among musical styles. For example, my Capriccio for clarinet, trombone and percussion includes an extended section of twelve-tone Dixieland; Mysterious Exit for flute and percussion ensemble combines elements of Hopi social dance songs with serialism; and, Traditions for violin, clarinet, guitar, and string bass is a synthesis of elements of Klezmer music with those from mainstream Western concert music.

In the case of Jazzical #8 for violin, alto sax, and marimba, elements of modern classical music and jazz are juxtaposed in a way to sometimes blur the lines between the styles. The “#8” in the title recognizes the kindred predecessors of this composition: Three Jazzicals, (published in versions for trumpet and tuba, clarinet and tuba, and soprano sax and tuba,) Jazzical #4 for horn, trombone, tuba, and piano, Jazzical #5 for euphonium, tuba and piano, Jazzical #6 in versions for solo alto sax and sax quartet, and solo alto sax and piano; Jazzical #7 “Latin Vibes” for string quartet, piano, bass, and drums; and Jazzical #8 for flute, cello, and marimba.

"Divertissements" for Bb clarinet and percussion by Howard J. Buss was composed in the autumn of 2016 for clarinetist Kathleen Mulcahy. This colorful composition is designed so that either one or two percussionists can perform it. The three movements take listeners through a wide range of emotions and sonic atmospheres. Lyrical sections that are playfully juxtaposed with forceful passages characterize the first movement, Temporal Intrigues. The hauntingly beautiful second movement, Mystic Eyes, has a dreamy, meditative quality. Fusional Escapades is energetic and, with the exception of the clarinet cadenza, the performers are equal partners. The sometimes-playful character of the music is reminiscent to that which occurs in the first movement.ing as it reaches its climax).

Instruments used in setup: marimba (4 octave,) snare drum, 2 tom toms, kick drum, 2 wood blocks, cowbell, suspended cymbal, triangle, 2 crash cymbals, and China cymbal.

Mallets: Because the percussionist moves back and forth between the marimba and non-pitched percussion,
a limited number of mallets are employed - 2 medium yarn marimba mallets, and 2 medium soft marimba
mallets. Since the butt-end of these mallets are used, it is important to select mallets with sturdy wooden
handles. At no time are the butt-ends of the mallets to be used on the marimba. Instead of using standard
yarn mallets, the player may elect to use multi-use mallets, as long as their resulting tone quality matches
that of traditional mallets.

Performance options: This work is designed so that the percussion part may be performed by one player.
However, there is an option to use two percussionists, one on the marimba and one on the non-pitched
percussion. The score uses separate staffs for these. If this option is chosen, the second player (non-pitched)
may either use a multiple percussion set-up or a drum set.

== Program Notes ==
"Soundscapes" for saxophone (alto doubling on tenor) and drum set by Howard J. Buss was written during December 2015 and is dedicated to saxophonist Dr. Barry McGinnis. It is in four movements: Urban Bustle, Blueish Serenity, In Transit, and Spiritosity. The saxophonist plays on an alto in the outer movements and a tenor in the inner two. As the title suggests, Urban Bustle is energetic and at times quite intense. Blueish Serenity had a contemplative, almost mystical quality and resembles a ballad. In the third movement, In Transit, the tenor sax is played unaccompanied. The music has an improvisatory and jazz-like character. The player switches back to alto sax for the final movement, Spiritosity. Following an opening percussion solo, the performers progress through an engaging series of lyrical and developmental sections. In the music one can hear ephemeral references to musical moments from earlier in the composition.
