Polyrhythmic Studies for Snare Drum is a compilation of 35 etudes and 26 solos for intermediate and advanced levels. It is designed to encompass several phases of music for the snare drum as well as to develop the minds and hands to perform both common and uncommon meters. The first section of the book contains an analysis of polyrhythms and abnormal groups; if studied carefully, this section will help in building a solid foundation of understanding so that polyrhythmic and odd group figures may be executed with little difficulty.

"This book is an etude book, while in the first eight pages of the book it goes over polyrhythmic studies. Its not really a book for teaching new information, there’s good information in the book itself, but most of it will be learned along the way of being a musician in high school and college. In other words, it dated, there are I feel better representations of the information in this book out there for cheaper if you want to learn about polyrhythmic studies. I would say that this is more of a performance book as opposed to a book designed to work on rhythmic improvement in the way its claiming. There are some difficult etudes in this book, I feel could be learned and help players progress. However, not only is it in several different styles, but it is also not well structured. I could say there is a benefit to more advanced players to have it in such a style of notation, but it would be hard to read for someone who had little experience with this notation and defeats the purpose of the book. This is why I gave it a one star rating." - Thomas Scott

"While this book doesn’t have a etude to play out of like other books of its kind. It is a book solely devoted to the improvement of playing ability for rolls, paradiddles, flams, ruffs, drags, and the various variations of the different aforementioned techniques, and how to play them broken down to the most basic level. This book starts with rolls, and differences between five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, and seventeen stroke rolls. In an order that works with the easiest to begin with, to the hardest. This book lays out the different stroked rolls in a way that works with a student of middle school age and on. I don’t see why a college student or someone with a percussion studio wouldn’t be able to benefit from this kind of text.
It goes on further with the different variations of the paradiddles and other rudiments in a similar way to the rolls, from the easier ones to the more difficult ones as the book progresses. There exercises for each section, but this is more of a workbook to build ability than a book to perform. So, before anyone buys this book with the intent to be able to perform anything out of it, that is not its intended use. This book is designed to make the playing of the covered materials easier, and give the material worked on more context and meaning." - Thomas Scott

"This book has a nice and well though out approach and appropriate progressive quality for a book like this. It outlines a rather interesting approach to working on not only independence but also working on counting, and it gets more and more difficult as it progresses. It also outlines the information in the book well with the introduction, and a well-defined explanation in each section of the book. Giving explanations of what not to do, and what to make sure and do. I would say that it isn’t a book for beginners, it is and will be most useful for advanced rhythm studies. This isn’t really a snare drum book, working fundamentals and teaching rudiments and other information specifically for snare drum. It is specifically for getting better at reading rhythms, and I feel would not only help with internal timing, but also sight-reading.
I would say that this book should not be bought by a middle or beginning band teacher, this is more for the use of studio teachers in percussion and or super advanced high school level or more collegiate to professional level instruction of percussion playing and rhythm work. It works on very intense levels of rhythm studies towards the end of the text and is more of a further study and building of technique and ability, not really a book for playing etudes out of. It is a text to help one systematically ready though and get better at playing and reading complex rhythms by use of subdivision practice and other forms of rhythm analysis to build a player’s knowledge and ability to play."- Thomas Scott

"I found the information in this snare drum book to be very contextual and progressive. There is a lot of good etudes and exercises to work in this book to help advance a student in the realm of snare drum performance. It starts off with slower exercises to help build the students ability and works to help build flams, accents, dynamics, and quality of other difficult playing techniques. There is very little in the way of explanation in this book, it just dives right in. There are little, short notations at the beginning of the exercises to explain the information one in about to play in the “here is what the base form is” kind of way. But that is about it, there isn’t much in the way of how to play each selection, or what it works the most on. So, it really puts all of its eggs in the quality of the teacher working out of this book’s basket. Its up to the teacher to explain the motivation of the book to their respective students. This is what it received its rating of three-stars." - Thomas Scott

This can be both good and bad for a teacher trying to take a step-by-step approach to teaching in a studio. This book did have an introduction, and in some of the etudes a brief explanation of the notation. Along with this, it does not state what level this is for in any online way of purchasing it due to its difficulty. So it could end up discouraging a student who does not know of the history of Delecluse and Macarez, or that this is a book series that was designed to be played after one works through the other beginning snare drum book for beginning college level or even high school level percussionists. There is still very little in the way of explaining how to play the pieces, this is more of a student performance edition of this series. "This book has a lot going on, first it’s in French, this won’t help a perspective student in the long run, but thankfully it has English explanations throughout most of the text. Unfortunately, however, there’s not much in the way of explanation overall in the book. It has multiple changes through to make it more progressive technique wise, but its I feel overall, hard to read just because of the way it notated. I liked the way it notates right hand and left-hand strokes, but not the overall notes notations. It’s very dated, and the last few pages the notation crosses the line, and it’s hard to understand what it’s asking for.
I didn’t really like this book overall, it has a well laid out and progressive set of exercises, and a well explained preface that goes over most of the information one will find in the text, but it’s hard to get past the style that the book is in. This would confuse most students that have to read it, it’s not in a style that’s easy on the eyes, along with that, I feel that even some students even with years of experience on the snare drum would not have an easy time reading in this style. Its I feel just not a good notation style. For this and other reasons, therefore it received a three-star rating." -Thomas Scott
