==Notes==
The piece is playable on two marimbas (low F & 4 octave). Players should use graduated rubber mallets (medium to soft) appropriate to register. Guatemalan latex wrapped mallets are preferable. Players should find the inherent dynamic requirements of each part/phrase/cell within the larger marked dynamics and improvise the micro-dynamic content throughout constantly interacting with the other players. Treat each part as a solo and then combine these interpretations to create the trio. The piece should have a flexible groove much like a Bach cello suite. Sixteenth notes (i.e. double strokes) should be slightly accented in an uneven “sloppy” double stroke with emphasis on the first note and nearly ghosted second note.
Amplified Manhassett Music Stand, Kalimba, Bass Bow, Superball Mallet & Live Electronics (Ableton Live)

==Notes==
Dark, True Center (2016) The work is notated with a combination of text, graphic, and traditional notation. The music stand is amplified via two clip-on contact microphones/pickups and Ableton Live is used for the live looping and processing (mostly reverb). The music stand is a rich resource for a gamut of unique timbres and pitches, which are here amplified to uncanny proportions. The kalimba is amplified and filtered by placing it on the music stand while it is played; additionally, touching the kalimba to one of the contact microphones produces a distortion as the repetition increases. As in my other works, herein, the juxtaposition of “noise” and “the sublime” hopefully leads one to confuse which is which, a place where memory and the moment also become indistinguishable from one another and one becomes truly centered in and by the sound.
Unstack/Re-Stack (2018) was inspired by a comment by the flautist, composer, and pedagogue, John “Jack” Fonville in 2011 regarding Jean-Charles François: “He was a fabulous improviser, stacking things upon things, totally original!” This work is dedicated to Jean-Charles, one of the most important composers of percussion music, performer of new music, improviser, and sadly, an underappreciated figure in the field of academic percussion music and pedagogy.
2 snare drums, 3 HoneyTone mini-guitar amps w/microphones

==Notes==
Areas 1: Voices…a dead person’s things (2016) is scored for two snare drums and three miniature, battery-powered guitar amplifiers with microphones. The battery power directly affects the feedback response of the amplifiers and thus different battery powers are required for each amp and the battery power changes during the performance, affecting the ability to execute the piece as intended, because of this an alternate ending is composed so that two outcomes are possible based on the battery power at the end of the work. FYI, the “noise” heard most prominently at the beginning and end of each take is created by the mini-amps and is part of the composition; it is not “noise” (i.e. unintended sound) introduced during the recording process. Also, throughout the work the sounds of the amps and microphones being manipulated on the snare drum heads and min-amp switches being turned on/off is unavoidable and considered part of the composition. Two takes are included to demonstrate the compositional integrity of the work alongside the aleatoric/unpredictable nature of the feedback and batteries.
Reflexive interactivity between performer/objects (dialogue, Re; Eddie Prévost), objects/objects, and performer/performer (heurism, Re: Prévost) throughout the interpretation of the work is demanded. The amplification makes audible aspects of the snare drum’s acoustic filtering which are audible to the performer but not always acoustically available to the audience without amplification.
==Notes==
Meditation on Living (2016) \. This work is a meditation, really a meditation on anything. It is a list of actions, mostly in text form, but also with traditional mensural notation. Because of the items involved and their interactions, alongside the use of feedback and localized acoustics, much of the work’s content is highly indeterminate, hence the qualifier of “living.” Nonetheless, the composition has a structure and an internal identity, an essence, that is recognizable/repeatable from performance to performance.

==Notes==
JOY! (of the beautiful ones) (2016) is scored for snare drum played with two plastic cards (credit cards, gift cards, hotel key cards, etc) with an optional line of spoken text from Charles Bukowski’s poem, the rat. This work is notated using traditional, modified, and graphic notation schemas. The notation and related performance techniques result in both predictable and unpredictable results at different times. The sounds are created entirely through friction between the rosined drumhead and the plastic cards. The cards are manipulated by position of contact on the drumhead, orientation/position of the cards themselves, bending, angle of attack, pressure, and speed; in many of these aspects they are used similarly to brushes in jazz drumming. The optional spoken text is: “…the rich pawed away at their many choices, and the young girls let them…”
==Notes==
Boxes of Music (2008) is scored for amplified tam tam, eleven music boxes, two very thin splash cymbals, two coffee cans, and electronics. The title lacks creativity, but is descriptive. The piece is a miniature sound-mass composition inspired by the so-called sound-mass compositions by composers such as György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, and others. The arch form of the work is easily identifiable and is built simply from the accumulation and then dissipation of sounds, the deconstruction and then re-emergence of familiar melodies. This is process music.

==Notes==
Beautiful Waste (2015-2016) is composed for 5 brake drums (newer 2-piece style not the old 1-piece variety, cassette tape, and electronics; it requires the following implements: two medium rubber mallets, wire brush, bamboo skewer, two bass bows. The title of the work refers to the brake drum-as musical instrument and it has a subtextual relationship (realized after the fact) to the narrative content in the second movement.

Movement one, Life is a Grindstone, is an exploration of repetition and subtle variation, monotony and minor difference, the day to day. The title will be self explanatory. The harsh, unforgiving electronic processing will be familiar. Rhythmic phasing is utilized between the hands in one section, and harmonics as well.

The title of movement two, Poem 456 (Bukowski), was inspired by Stuart Saunders Smith’s lovely composition, Poems I, II, III for five brake drums, cowbell, and narrator. Smith’s work also provided the realization that brake drums could be a viable sound source for a solo composition. The sample of Charles Bukowski reading his poem “Man Mowing the Lawn” followed by what appears to be an excerpt of an interview or conversation was found on a homemade, unmarked, cassette mixtape containing numerous excerpts of poets reading poetry and conversing; the original source is unknown.

Movement three, Gamelan Shtyle, applies a hand-dampening technique taken from gamelan performance practice and applies it to the brake drums. Additionally the extreme contrasts heard in Balinese gamelan music are reflected in this composition. The center of the movement features a blues-inspired cadenza, à la Barney Childs.

==Notes==
Beautiful Waste (2015-2016) is composed for 5 brake drums, cassette tape, and electronics; it requires the following implements: two medium rubber mallets, wire brush, bamboo skewer, two bass bows.

The title of movement two, Poem 456 (Bukowski), was inspired by Stuart Saunders Smith’s lovely composition, Poems I, II, III for five brake drums, cowbell, and narrator. Seven Thoughts for Glockenspiel (2015) is scored for glockenspiel, two rin, three elephant bells, two magic wands, and nine graduated telephone bells, along with a variety of implements; some of the instruments are also utilized as implements. The work was inspired by the compositions and improvisations of percussionist, Jean-Charles François, especially his work for snare drum, Fragments II. The complexity of “noise” and its juxtaposition with “the sublime” drives many of my compositions. The longtime challenge of realizing this aesthetic using a conventional, pitched percussion instrument like the glockenspiel came to fruition in this work and will be further developed in future compositions.
snare drum with rosined head, 1 almglocken (mouth must be uneven and able to rock side to side and large enough to fit over the mini radio), 10.25” aluminum pot lid (club cookware brand), clamshell, clock coil, miniature radio, and the following implements: two small chains, bass bow, and a bamboo skewer.

==Notes==
System No. 1 The work is notated using text, graphic notation, and some conventional music notation. The notation demands reflexive interactivity between performer and objects throughout the interpretation of the work. This reflexive interactivity is a required feature of the work, as many of the sounds are produced through the automation of the objects, which once set in motion, move and sound on their own accord; this occurs with the almglocken, aluminum pot lid, clamshell, and clock coil. The title comes from the performative spectacle of the work, which presents to the viewer like the management of a system of moving objects. The management of the objects is not passive but rather an active and progressively more determinate role as the work develops.
The musical content of Vibe Suite is probably much less profound than the individual titles would suggest, but the aesthetic aim is existential transcendence and the sublime via simplicity. Each movement is a reflection and composed as needed; the series will continue for as long as needed. RE: the destruction of a life by a precious little flower – Solo Vibraphone & Live Electronic Processing is the second work in the Vibe Suite, I-IV (2008-ongoing) for vibraphone and electronics is an ongoing series of works for vibraphone; the series concept was borrowed from Stuart Saunders Smith’s wonderful series of Links for vibraphone. The musical content of Vibe Suite is probably much less profound than the individual titles would suggest, but the aesthetic aim is existential transcendence and the sublime via simplicity. Each movement is a reflection and composed as needed; the series will continue for as long as needed. The suite can be performed in a variety of ways: selected movements, in its entirety, solo, ensemble, with or without electronics, and so on.
==Notes==
Zzzerrrrrangatang! (2015) is composed solo for four elephant bells and snare drum. The elephant bells are graduated in size and thusly in the pitches they produce. The snare drum’s playing surface (i.e. drum head) is coated with rosin just as a violinist’s bow. The sound in this composition is generated primarily by friction—the rubbing of the elephant bells on the rosined drum head—just as a violinist rubs their bow on the violin’s strings. Due to the physical nature of the elephant bells and snare drum head, the sounds generated by the performer are, to a degree, indeterminate (i.e. unpredictable). The composition is notated with graphic and text notation, rather than conventional music notation. Built into the notation schema and interpretation of the work is the opportunity for parametrically controlled improvisation, or rather in-the-moment reflexive interactivity between performer and objects. The title is derived from the composition’s inspiration, Michael Zerang, who is a creative, Chicago-based percussionist that often utilizes friction in his own work.

==Notes==
…the tiny rooms of starvation and madness. This beautiful phrase comes from the poem, “You Tell Me What It Means” by Charles Bukowski and his book, “The flash of lightning behind the mountain.” The theme of, and actual phrase, tiny rooms, appears throughout the writing of Bukowski over his lifetime – a literal memory as well as a metaphor of Bukowski’s personal experience and his views of society, economic systems, cultural norms, human limitations, et cetera. I had been wrestling for months with how to structure and subsequently notate the various ideas, or sound worlds, within this composition, and when I came across this phrase I immediately knew that it would be the composition’s title.

In addition to being greatly impacted by Bukowski’s writing, I am also fascinated by the solo percussion work “Fragments II” by the percussionist, Jean-Charles François. I had not fully absorbed (maybe accepted is the better term…) François’ approach to structure and organization in “Fragments II” until I came across the phrase by Bukowski. The collision of these two ideas (fragments, rooms) or turns of phrase (sound, words) finally made sense in terms of structure and organization. So, this work is a series of tiny rooms (RE: Bukowski) or fragments (RE: François) – in more classical terms, vignettes, movements, or scenes – unrelated at the micro level yet inextricably bound on the macro level of composition; each fragment or room is stark and discrete. Any number of the rooms may be used, or not, in any performance and the order of the rooms is variable.
==Notes==
The Bleak, Disconsolate Pulchritude is a quintet composed for the Casper College Percussion Group and completed on November 28, 2014 in Casper, Wyoming. The work is scored for 16 spoxe and feedback. Spoxe are circular aluminum frames that come from tunable drums called roto toms, which can be from six to eighteen inches in diameter. The feedback is accomplished with two to three microphones (Shure SM57, SM58, or equivalent) that are each plugged into small guitar amps (10 to 20 watts each). The composition’s title was inspired by the vast Wyoming landscape, and is also fitting to the sound quality (timbre, envelope, pitch) of the spoxe, which have a mellow, bell-like tone. The composition is notated using proportional notation for each of the five parts; there is no score, as the five parts have a relationship determined by each of the five performers. This sort of organization of parts without a score is what the composer, Stuart Saunders Smith, calls “music of simultaneity.”
For Johanna Beyer (2015) is scored for speaking voice, large woodblock, giant tam tam, three lion’s roars, and four to sixteen-or-more triangles. Johanna Magdalena Beyer (1888-1944) was a German-born composer and pianist, considered one of the Ultra-Modernists of early 20th Century American Art music. Beyer was an integral composer and networker in the development of percussion music in the Western canon, alongside Henry Cowell, John Cage, Lou Harrison, William Russell, and others. The poem, “TOTAL ECLIPSE,” used in this composition was penned by Beyer and the instrumentation is a nod to Beyer’s preferences in several of her compositions. Anyone familiar with Beyer’s percussion works will recognize the woodblock part and lion’s roars as iconic. The composition is notated using traditional music notation, however the relationships of the performers are not precisely fixed, rather they are coordinated within timeframes allowing individual performers a degree of choice during the realization of the work.
Cajon Trio for Nate #1 and Nate #2 (JAM BOX) was composed in Carbondale, IL between December 2007 and February 2008 and is dedicated to two of the author’s former students, Nathan Staley and Nathan Kingery. The work was premiered on April 7, 2008 at Shryock Auditorium in Carbondale, IL by the SIUC Percussion Group. Cajons of the Peruvian/Spanish type with string snares should be graduated in pitch high to low (players 1-3 respectively). Various attack points, parts of the hand, and extended techniques are utilized, in addition to hand claps, and playing on the thighs. A freely improvised introduction and solo sections for players one and three offer opportunities for improvisation against the otherwise composed and rhythmically dense material.
