=== Review ===<br />
This extended, three movement work for Percussion octet is marked advanced by the publisher and is scored for orchestra bells, xylophone and various standard orchestral percussion instruments (including 4 timpani). The two keyboard percussion parts include single-line writing, some double. stops, rolls and glisses, but no mallet suggestions. The cymbal and small concert percussion parts contain straight-forward writing with detailed performance directions and mallet choices. The drum parts are also straightforward and contain single-stoke writing with some rolls and flams with few Performance directions. The lead snare drum part is the most difficult of these parts. The .timpani part is difficult note-wise, but requires no pedal technique during each movement, with tuning changes occurring only between movements. Movement I (Presto) is written in 2/4 and 3/8, both sectionally and as changing meters. The 2 keyboard percussion parts seem to have the main thematic content with rhythmic counterpoint and accompaniment provided by the other instruments. (Adagio molto) is written in 5/4, again with the keyboard percussion instruments the main thematic matierals. Sustained sounds and rolls, punctuating rhythmic outbursts, hocket-like sections and pointillistic passages highlight the movement. Movement III (Allegro vivo) is written mostly in 4/4 and 2/2. A middle section starting in 8/8-with changes 7/8, 5/8, 2/8, 4/8, 3/4, 6/8, 4/4-leads to an extended timpani cadenza. The whole of the movement is very drummy, with the timpani being the dominant instrument much of the time. A section with several irregular-length ostinatos is of special interest. Suitable as an example of an extended work is symphonic form for standard instruments. The piece does not rely on gimmicks, unusual performance practics, exotic instruments, etc. Would serve nicely as the focus of a semester's work for a good high school ensemble, or as the main feature of a younger university percussion ensemble concert. - John Baldwin, December 1992<ref>[http://www.pas.org PAS.ORG]</ref><br />

=== Reviews ===<br />
5 Items is a 15:30 solo for marimba and percussion ensemble using five percussionists plus the soloist. A 4 1/3-octave marimba is necessary to perform the solo part. Other percussion instruments are: Player II—orchestra bells, xylophone, bongos, timbales; Player III—vibraphone; Player IV—suspended cymbal, finger cymbal, triangle, medium gong, guiro, cowbell; Player V—triangle, four concert tom-toms, five temple blocks, cymbal, maracas, three suspended brake drums; Player VI—four timpani, five woodblocks, bass drum. Each movement is unique and has its own character, yet there is a unifying quality throughout the work that holds the composition together. The interval of an augmented fourth and the octave prevail and establish the tonality for the most part. There is also quite a bit of interplay between the soloist and the ensemble. Not all movements are in strict time, which gives the soloist and ensemble a chance to be creative. The accompanying cassette is well done and provides the listener with a definitive performance. 5 Items is an excellent composition for an advanced high school or a college ensemble. The solo part is not extremely difficult but does require a good four-mallet player. 5 Items is an important contribution to the percussion ensemble literature— a solo part that is accessible to many players. Performers and audiences alike should find this a most rewarding and enjoyable piece. - John Beck, December 1994<ref>[http://www.pas.org PAS.ORG]</ref><br />

Double Fanfare was a co-composed piece written by two prolific composers of percussion music. Lou Harrison is known for his use of Balinese and Javanese Gamelan elements in his music while Anthony Cirone, who had a 36 year tenure with the San Francisco Symphony, write music from a more classically based concepts. The Double Fanfare is split in to two sextet, the American Gamelan Orchestra and the Symphonic Percussion Section. Each sextet is highlighted to emphasize its percussive contribution, but will also demonstrate the others role at times in the work. The piece is piece is fantastically constructed and clearly demonstrates the differences and yet the combined beauty of each sextet as a whole.<br />

=== Reviews ===<br />
This sextet is marked internmediate by the publisher and is scored for 3 snare drums, suspend/hand cymbals, triangle and bass drnm. The 3 drum parts contain hocket-like passages, unison writing and solo passages, utilizing both mares on and off. The other three parts support the snare drum parts with hocket-like ostinatos and unison writing. The introduction rises all six parts in a hocket-like manner. Rolls and embellishments are limited to the snare drum parts-fp long rolls, 5’s and 9’s, flams and ruffs, etc. A tempo of quarter = 120 should not prove to be a problem for intermediate snare drummers. Dynamics and performance directions are clearly marked, the printing is large and very clear. Suitable for teaching and recital use by beginning-intermediate percussionists. The cymbal, triangle and bass drum parts are really beginning technically but the hocket-like passages require a more intermediate level of counting and ensemble experience. - John Baldwin, December 1992<ref>[http://www.pas.org PAS.ORG]</ref><br />

==Description==<br />
On your mark...get set...rotate! Wait, what? That's right, rotate! In this piece, percussionists physically move to other positions onstage to play different instruments (and try to stay in the right place musically). The vibraphone player moves to play bells, xylophone to timpani, and congas to cymbals. As if the concept of players and mallets-in-motion isn't challenging enough, the time signature constantly changes. Unless executed with precision, this piece could turn into one giant Kerfuffle!<br />

"Fiesta Latina" is a percussion octet scored for the following instrumentation: solo drumset/marimba; percussion 1--marimba; percussion 2--marimba and metal shaker; percussion 3--vibes, triangle and agogo bells; percussion 4--xylophone, metal wind chimes, metal shaker, and samba whistle; percussion 5--five timpani (alternate four timpani part provided); percussion 6_light plastic shaker, agogo bells, and snare drum; percussion 7--metal wind chimes, tamborim and light plastic shaker. This eight-minute drumset/marimba solo feature could potentially be utilized not only for percussion ensemble concert but also as material for a junior or senior solo recital, on which the soloist would have a more comprehensive musical presentation. After a freely, almost rhapsodic introduction, "Fiesta Latina" features the soloist on drumset performing a samba with keyboard percussion accompaniment. Notation for types of sticks employed (such as switching from sticks to plastic brushes or Blasticks) are noted in the drumset part. The solo marimba part doubles the section marimba performer in a samba like "shout" chorus (two-mallet technique required). The marimba soloist then returns to drumset for the conclusion of the composition. This percussion ensemble feature will be appropriate for the younger collegiate percussion ensemble. David Mancini's "Fiesta Latina" is a great spin-off from his "Suite for Solo Drumset."<br />

Suite for Solo Drum Set & Percussion Ensemble is a lively showcase for solo drum set and percussion ensemble and features various musical styles such as Latin-funk, funk, Afro-Cuban, and fast samba. There are numerous opportunities for the drummer to ad-lib over the established groove and stretch out some of the solo sections.<br />

=== Review ===<br />
Suite for Solo Drum Set and Percussion Ensemble by David Mancini is an outstanding one-movement three-part, concerto for the college drumset soloist with seven percussionists accompanying. The percussion septet's instrumentation consists of is 1st percussion bongos, mangle, chime tree, finger cymbals, tamborim, log drum, metal shaker, 2nd percussion snare drum, metal shaker, metal and wooden agogo bells, log drum, 3rd percussion 4 concert tom-toms, bell tree, temple blocks, chinese cymbal, xylophone, timbales, claves, 4th percussion chimes, xylophone, metal wind chimes, finger cymbals, afuche, claves, 5th percussion vibes, claves, 6th percussion. marimba, assorted metal bells, finger cymbals, 7th percussiontimpani, police whistle. Naturally, the soloist should have at least a conventional drumset: played with sticks, felt mallets, and brushes. The three-part concerto contrasts the definitive styles of funk-rock, AfroCuban compound meter, and a lively samba. Opportunities for free improvisation are included as cadenzas-connecting and fusing the three sections into this 9-minute singlemovement composition. This composition has recently become a staple in the "college-guest performing repertoire" of such drumset artists as Ed Soph and Steve Houghton. Also, it is a wonderful addition to the college undergraduate percussion ensemble program or even to a junior or senior undergraduate recital. The drumset soloist is required to perform very melodically on drumset as well as interpret the styles previously discussed with good taste and dynamic artistry. The accompanying percussion ensemble parts are challenging without being overly-demanding. Only two-mallet technique is required of the keyboard percussion players. This ensemble is highly recommended for the college/university percussion ensemble or for that special "day of percussion." Congratulations to both David Mancini and Kendor for their cooperative production of such clearly notated ensemble music and for a welcome addition to the "drumset/ percussion ensemble" repertoire. - James Lambert<ref>http://www.pas.org/resources/research/research-compositions</ref><br />

==Program Notes==<br />
The Concerto No. 1 in D Minor was completed in August 2003. This concerto was composed for marimbist Brenton Dunnington and was Taylor’s first work for a solo mallet percussion instrument. Taylor’s concerto displays confident youth as the composer ambitiously recalls the Romanticism of the past. The work is a large-scale undertaking for the soloist. Taylor has truly constructed a solo part of transcendental technique and virtuosity. The concerto is tangible and tuneful, visually captivating and memorable from the first encounter.<br />
<br />
The first movement employs late 19th-century harmony blended with Taylor’s personal aesthetics. The full and rich orchestration is most evident here. The movement also displays the endurance and facility of the soloist. The opening fanfare and romantic theme form the basis for shaping the movement. Taylor thoroughly develops the theme in a romantically expanded sonata form. The solo cadenza (with improvisational intent) emerges from the end of the development and drives on to explore the theme. It demands intricate, complete command of the marimba and fearless composure from the soloist to accomplish the aggressively fluctuating tempi, the broad dynamic spectrum, and perilous octave descents. After a brief adagio, the first movement reaches an exhilarating orchestral conclusion.<br />
<br />
The slow second movement, still rooted in Romanticism, slips in and out of 20th-century harmonies. The movement is a tale of love and passion. Titled "Adagio", the movement, opening in C major, is monothematic but for a brief recapitulation of the first movement’s main theme. The movement’s poignant melody is carried by each of the oboe, clarinet, and flute solos with marimba. There is a tender, recurring duo between solo marimba and harp followed by a dramtic, climactic chorale where the soloist employs six-mallet technique. The movement culminates in a vivid new statement of the movement’s main melody and fades off into the distance.<br />
<br />
<br />
A thematic transformation develops several stages further in the third movement. The Finale is a hero’s tale of battle, danger, love, and triumph. Each section evokes a different account on the journey. Taylor reemphasizes the D minor tonality of the opening movement. The third movement bursts into the exhilarating and vigorous first subject, which features a thrilling rhythmic motif and interchange between the soloist and orchestra. The tale moves through a central lyrical episode in place of a development section. Again, earlier material is recalled. As the final vivace builds to a climax, the soloist unleashes fiery virtuosity with the orchestra. The majestic recapitulation, now in D major, surveys all of the Finale’s opening material concluded by the coda in a brilliant presto and fortissimo.<br />

==Program Notes==<br />
Extended timpani adds small suspended timpani to the usual large floor drums. These small drums extend the range of the timpani into the treble clef. For this concerto I use ten small drums and a set of 6 big drums. These 16 timpani have a range of the low “c” string of a cello, up to the “a” played by the oboe to tune the orchestra. David Herbert, the timpanist of the Chicago Symphony owns these small drums and had them made for the 2nd Timpani Concerto by William Kraft. It is this set of “tenor” timpani that this concerto was written for and premiered on. <br />
<br />
This work asks for a great deal of virtuosity from the soloist and the orchestra alike. The timpanist in this is literally surrounded/encircled by drums. The bigs drums go from low to high, while the small drums suspended above go from high to low. It is a challenge of remembering where each note is placed, large distances between notes(a meter between a whole step) and the actual kinetics of performing the patterns of stickings on 16 surfaces. <br />
This concerto’s musical structure is threefold - 24 small movements played without pause are then grouped into 5 larger movements forming one continuous work of 35 minutes. The idea of pavilions scattered in a Chinese garden offering focal points and places to sit and enjoy the different sections and views of the garden influenced the form/structure of this piece. The collection of small movements also mirrors the collection of small drums. Musical themes reappear in different movements in different treatments and create the idea of seeing/hearing the garden from different pavilions. <br />

<br />
<br />
<br />

==Program Notes==<br />
Colossus features a timpani soloist with accompaniment from seven percussionists, most of whom play multiple percussion setups. The piece features strong themes throughout, with all voices painting a very well-orchestrated picture. The timpanist is featured both in a melodic role as well as in a more primal, rhythmic role. Precise markings help spell out every nuance, and the form is well-paced. The concerto features a dramatic cadenza just before the main material recapitulates into an explosive conclusion. Eric Rodis won 3rd prize in the Percussive Arts Society composition contest in 2002 with Colossus which makes a great showpiece to feature the timpanist in an accessible way.<br />

<br />
<br />
CONCERTO FOR DRUM SET AND 7 PERCUSSIONISTS was recommissioned by the University of Oklahoma Percussion Ensemble. Eastman School of Music percussion instructor, John Beck, has once again contributed a new work of substance which should become a standard work for years to come. Beck has stated, "i t is written with the idea that the soloist functions as the dominant force in the composition, therein establishing its degree of success on any given performance." The work begins with a brief introduction for ensemble interspersed with drum set cadenzas. The soloist then plays a rhythmic motive which introduces the first section. A metric modulation leads to a slow section which is climaxed by a 30 second improvisation for both the soloist and the ensemble. There is a very fast and exciting conclusion. Some of the unusual effects are created by use of a water gong, cymbals on the timpani and the use of pedaled timpani bass lines. This piece is one requiring considerable preparation but well worth the effort in musical and audience appeal. Kendor is to be congratulated for the clear machine type set and neatness of the layout. Obvious college level material.<br />
