			IMAGES was conceived with the desire to write unaccompanied pieces for timpani which would be musically expressive and therefore, there are moments of lyricism as well as moments of virtuosity in the texture of the piece. This is accomplished through the use of harmonics, different mallet sounds, extended techniques such as glissandos and placing a cymbal on the timpani head. Each movement is stylistically dedicated to a well-known timpanist: Saul Goodman, Cloyd Duff, Vic Firth and Fred Hinger in order of performance.

			This work contains four movements each of which need four drums as well as five cymbals and large tam-tam. Four of the five cymbals are suspended while the fifth is placed upside down/inverted on the lowest timpani head. The performer is required to use combinations of fingers, multiple mallet technique, alternate to butt end of mallet (wood), snap rattan mallet against head, glissando with fingernail, addition of mutes in some cases, playing inverted cymbal while moving pedal, use of brushes, one handed rolls, and sympathetic resonance.
