			This quartet involves the use of minimal drumsets for each player, made up of only snare drum, bass drum with pedal, and splash cymbal. The sets should be arranged in a semi-circle facing the audience. In many respects, "In The Pocket" is fairly typical of this type piece. It moves through a variety of styles, including swing, rock, and classical. Each player is given a chance to shine with short solos; most are written out but some are to be improvised. Solo sections are performed over accompaniment by the other three players. There is much use of the gradual diminution technique in which a two-measure phrase is repeated, reduced to a one-measure phrase, and then further reduced to a half- measure phrase. The use of small drumsets makes this quartet an exercise in precision time, rather than a bombastic display of technique. Younger drumset students will find the piece challenging and fun to play.
