The exercises in this booklet were written many years ago when I was asked to teach the then very young daughter (Lilly!) of a colleague to play the snare drum. None of the exercise books that were commercially available at the time seemed to me suitable for being given to children. Although the majority of these were certainly pedagogically valuable publications, I found them too dry and cheerless for teaching children. Once again "do it yourself" was in demand:<br />

Lilly's Drum Book contains exercises and simple pieces for teaching beginner snare drums to children. In all of the exercises in this booklet, a connection is made between the spoken word and drummed musical text in order to support and facilitate rhythmic play.<br />
<br />
I think it makes a lot of sense, especially when teaching children, for each teacher to find their own words to describe and explain the content of a new exercise. For this reason, I have completely dispensed with methodological explanations between the exercises.<br />
