== Description ==
This composition was commissioned by the percussion ensemble of Schutterij St.Barbara Leveroy and Henrico Stevens. It is dedicated to Mark Voermans. It was the conductor's wish to write a composition that would fit into a total program with the concept of time. Ultimately, this became a work for percussion soloist with accompaniment. The title The Seventh Hour is not programmatic, but refers more to certain matters that emerge in the composition. For example, the metronomes in this work are supposed to represent old-fashioned mantel clocks. The hours are represented by the 12-tone chords. The number 7 is mainly represented by the 7 different tones (phrygian series) used in the composition, often as clock motifs. The theme in the first part is also built up from this series, as is the main theme from part 2. The number 7 is also often used for the number of bars of a passage (part 2) or a repetition of a certain rhythm. Part 3 is, as it were, a large cadence for the solo kalimba (using 7 different notes). The last part starts with an imitation of the mantel clocks by the solo percussionist. Various facets from the earlier parts also return. The ending depicts the infinity of time. The lone mantel clock that remains and the resounding gong.
