Underdog Rag is scored for marimba quartet. The increasing number of "rag" enthusiasts will be in for a bit of a surprise when they start reading through this one. (The surprise is finding meters of 4/4, 3/4, 7/8, 14/8, and 28/8.) The longer bars and odd meters are beamed and grouped so they are easy to read. Most of the playing is conventional two mallet playing, although the "bass" part is probably best done with four mallets. The fourth part requires the lower range of a four octave instrument and it would be possible to place the fourth and first parts on the same instrument. The copy is large and easy to read with no page-turn parts. Full score is also included.
