Program Notes

Blossoms was composed for the University of Texas at Arlington Percussion Ensemble (Andrew Eldridge, director) in celebration of their performance at the 2024 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). The work is inspired by the natural process of growth and transformation, yet it does not attempt to depict a specific narrative. Instead, the piece reflects a universal theme of evolution—be it the unfolding of a flower, the development of a musical idea, or the organic progression of time itself.

The composition is structured to evoke the sense of change through both its sonic texture and rhythmic development. As the piece unfolds, shifting patterns and contrasting colors emerge, representing various stages of growth. The ensemble's performance, with its wide array of percussion instruments, mirrors the delicate balance between order and spontaneity, emphasizing the beauty and unpredictability of transformation.

Blossoms invites listeners to experience the journey of development without a fixed endpoint—capturing the essence of growth as a fluid, ongoing process rather than a destination.
