His prior faculty positions included Butler University in Indianapolis and the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music in Washington, D.C. He also served as principal percussionist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (1964-1981), and was a percussionist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for four years in the early sixties.

Dr. James L. Moore was editor/owner of Per-Mus Publications, a firm specializing in music for percussion instruments that he founded in 1976.

From 1964-1992 Dr. Moore was head of percussion studies at the Ohio State University School of Music.
