Overview
Hinger, Fred. Technique for the Virtuoso Tympanist. Hackensack, New Jersey: Jerona Music
Corporation, 1981.
This book is for one who already knows how to read and play snare drum and marimba music and knows some basic theory. It concentrates on the problems of timpani music like time signatures, tunings, and stickings. The beginning discusses phrasing, dampening, tuning, playing legato, etc. Then we turn to section two where there is practicing material for these techniques. “The Exercises will provide technical and coordination development… the Studies are pieces which combine the previous exercises into more interesting and musical experiences. The Etudes are a culmination of all the concepts presented in a manner in which they might appear in the musical repertoire of the orchestra today.” Also, included in the back is a list of repertoire that a professional timpanist may likely encounter.
