Descriptions
Essay for percussion and wind band was written especially for the Royal Harmony Woensels music corps in honor of their 100th anniversary. The assignment was to compose a work that covers as many facets of percussion as possible, both tuned and untuned. The work is composed both rhythmically and melodically for the percussionist. The work consists of 3 contrasting parts without a programmatic element. The first part is a slow section in which the orchestra plays a slowly drawn-out melody which is rhythmically accompanied by the solo percussionist. This has the function of a bell that plays in contrast above the orchestra. The second part concerns a marimba melody played at a moderate tempo which is taken over by the orchestra. The last part is a fiery final dance.
