Program Notes

This piece was commissioned by the Saitama University Wind Orchestra. My goal was to create a full orchestral piece with percussion instruments. This piece uses a variety of instruments. Particularly distinctive is the extensive use of metal instruments (glockenspiel, vibraphone, crotales, chimes, triangles, wind chimes, cymbals, tam-tam). I used many metal instruments to express a sense of coolness and low temperature. The first and second movements are centered around vocals played by keyboard percussion instruments, with other percussion instruments adding color. The tempo does not need to be constant. The third movement is characterized most by the interplay of rhythms. In [N], all eight performers play the leading role. The melody that appears here is the same as in [B] of the first movement. Please pay attention to how the drums that form the core of the rhythm, the two marimbas that cover a wide range of tones, and the metal instruments of various characteristics all intertwine.
