The name Timp Tom is derived from Timpany. You could say that this instrument replaces the tympani. Timp toms usually consist of 3 single-headed tom toms. However, combinations of 4 tom toms also occur. The instrument is carried by means of a bracket to which the timp toms are attached. Mainly, timpani sticks or specific timp tom sticks are used to play the instrument.
