Description

Elusive Rounds received its world premiere on the November 7, 2020 installment of the University of South Florida International Music Festival Virtual Concert Series. It was performed by percussionists Robert McCormick and William Brown. The title is based on a succession of incipient “rounds”, or canons that form the structural basis of the duet. Following an introduction played as rolls on both glockenspiels, Player Two introduces the principal thematic ideas of the piece, followed shortly by Player One. The two players then engage in a rapid succession of imitative patterns with frequent changes of meter and rhythmic subdivisions. Occasionally, the two parts alternate as a soloist and an accompanist. After a succession of sections increasing in tempo, the two instruments converge in rhythmic unison. The imitative process resumes for the remainder of the piece.
