Henk Mertens studied clarinet, composition, and conducting at the conservatories of Maastricht and Zwolle with, among others, Leo van Tol, Leon Bosch, John Slangen, and Alex Schillings. His compositions often have a chamber music character and can be stylistically described as postmodern and neo-eclectic. Mertens does not shy away from any technique. A typical feature of his music is the metamorphosis of themes. In addition to composing, Mertens conducts various orchestras and plays in the Belline Quartet.
