Program Notes

for the 2007 ESU Music Day Percussion Section.

1337 Machine was written for the 2007 ESU Music Day Percussion Section. This is a day where as many as 40-50 musicians come together and perform chamber music with each other. This piece was designed for the high school and middle school students to perform for the closing concert. The piece is written to allow multiple players playing a variety of instruments on each of the mallet and percussion parts.

1337 Machine is simply leet speak reference to the performers being leet, which translates in gamer speak to being elite. The students are an "Elite Machine". The work is focuses on building confidence in young players to play rhythmic phrasing in a melodic fashion. The work also allows the musician the opportunity to focus on dynamics, patterns and formal structures to strengthen their musical understanding and performance.
