Review by Ashley Feist: I think this book is a great way to start a beginning snare drummer. I recommend it for all ages, but the concepts are explained quickly, in short paragraphs rather than taking the time to be really through and detailed. Therefore, this may be for ages 12 and up, quick learners, or someone who already has a basic understanding of how music/rhythm works. Rating- I

Tom Morgan

General Info

Year: 2002
Edition: 1st Edition
Publisher: C. Alan
Cost: Book Cost - $0.00   |   Supplemental Books - $0.00

Overview

It begins with tips about how to practice well. It discusses how to hold the sticks and the proper stance at a snare drum. Then it introduces how to read and count music. First, there are a few exercises and then a piece of music. This is how the rest of the book is organized: It introduces a concept (quarter notes, eighth notes, accents, dynamics), provides exercises to practices each concept, and then a piece of music which includes the learned concept. It also provides pages with all the dynamic markings, note values, time signatures, and common sticking patterns so one is supplied with a reference of each. At the end, Tom Morgan cleverly adds 14 pages of his next book, A Sequential Approach to Rudimental Snare Drum, to provide a hint of what the next steps are to learning to play snare drum.
