Overview

Allen, Robert. Beginning Drum Set: Hi Hat, Snare and Bass, Ride Cymbal, Brushes, and Special Bass Drum Studies. Cleveland Hts., Ohio: Brook Publishing Company, 1967.

This book gets right to the music. First, it goes over the jazz pattern on the ride cymbal. He tells you not to move on until you are very comfortable with the exercise. Then, we slowly add some bass drum and then hi-hat to the mix. The whole book is full of measures of music and if someone were to follow every single one of them, they could pick up on how to play these parts. The next step is to do ride, hi-hat, bass drum, and then snare/woodblock/or tom-tom with the other hand. He mixes triplets and eighth notes and at the end he as some tips about using brushes.

Student Reviews

This book is for beginning drum set players who are already familiar with how to read music and how it works. I say this because he doesn’t explain how to hold the stick, how to hit the drum, or really explain anything. This isn’t a bad thing because I, a musician who may want to start jazz drum set, can very easily use this book to get comfortable with each hand and foot and the patterns. However, if you want to learn more than this, you may want to try another book. This gives exercises that are very repetitive and long, but this is written this way so anyone can learn step-by-step how to add each instrument at a time. It gets the job done, but this is only the beginning to jazz drum set.
