Technique

In one hand, rest the clave on your first knuckle and your palm while creating a little cup in your palm to produce a resonating chamber. Do not "hold" the clave as it will deaden the resonant sound of the wood. Strike the resting clave in the middle... experiment with placement of the stroke until you find the most resonant sound from the instrument.
