Program Notes

Review

This composition, a duet scored for four timpani, four roto-toms (12" & 14" & 16" & 18") and drumset, is exactly what its title says. The first two sections of the work involve an intricate interplay of rhythmic and melodic figures with many changes in dynamic markings between the two parts. A short cadenza by the timpani/roto-toms player ushers in the final Afro-Latin six eight section. Here the timpani/roto-toms part has a solo accompanied by the drumset. This work is a welcome addition to the college level recital literature for percussion. Both parts are fairly equal in difficulty and require good reading ability of thirty-second note patterns, sixteenth and thirty-second note triplets, while moving around the drums. Performers and audience alike will find this piece very rewarding. - Frank Shaffer, February 1982[1]
