Program Notes

I’ve always had some difficulty explaining to others what it was like to live in Hong Kong. It’s an extraordinarily vibrant place, packed with fascinating sights, smells, and a massive population of very busy people. From my perspective, nothing encapsulated that experience better than their infamous minibus system. Straddling the line between large van and little bus, these ubiquitous vehicles were invariably packed to the gills with passengers, relentlessly rushing from one stop to the next.

I have to admit that my first few experiences were quite nerve wracking. Hurtling down the narrow mountainside roads of Sai Kung, I couldn’t help but imagine all 19 of us careening off the edge of a cliff into Clearwater Bay. Undaunted, our driver would continually accelerate around tight turns, only slamming on the brakes to avoid running lost tourists or the occasional cyclist off the road. I eventually came to trust in the fact that they ran these routes thousands of times a year and were intimately familiar with the thin line between maximum speed and calamity. I even grew to really enjoy my frequent trips on the minibus and thought of it more as a thrilling roller coaster ride through the Hong Kong countryside than simply a means to get from point A to point B.[1]
