Robert Fleisher attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, graduated with honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and earned his doctorate in composition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The author of Twenty Israeli Composers: Voices of a Culture (1997), he is also a contributing composer and essayist in Theresa Sauer’s Notations 21 (2009). His music has been heard in Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and throughout the United States. Recordings appear on Centaur, Capstone, and SEAMUS labels. A resident fellow at the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences, Millay Colony for the Arts, Mishkenot Sha’ananim, Montalvo Center for the Arts, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Yaddo, his work has also been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, and the Ruttenberg Arts Foundation. He recently received his seventh grant from the Illinois Arts Council. Dr. Fleisher has served on the music faculties of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1978-1980), the University of California, Los Angeles (1980-1982), and Northern Illinois University (1983-2014).[1]
