Program Notes

Gainsborough is a standard in the percussion ensemble repertoire, performed many times a year by university and professional groups. The 1st movement has a wonderful balance of pitched and non-pitched melodies. The melodic percussion instruments provide a folk-song style flavor while the non-pitched parts are written utilizing a classical orchestral style. The 2nd movement features the melodic percussion instruments by exploring the timbres created by the vibraphone, marimba, orchestra bells, and chimes. The timpani and metal percussion instruments highlight these colors and compliment them nicely. The 3rd movement is a fast 2/4 march that is occasionally interrupted by a 3/8 measure to provide a slight lift in ones step.
