Online Review
"In Praise of Johnny Appleseed," an original ballet in eight movements for three percussionists and dancers, is at long last available. Although scored as a trio, Harrison suggests that using multiple players on each part is an option. Marimba and vibraphone have been substituted in this version for the original's marimba and handmade flute. Descriptions for the construction of items such as "pipe claves" and "wooden boxes" are provided, along with suggestions for substitutions for instruments such as "sistrums" and "clock coils." The work features an "elastic" formal structure in which performers can order the arrangement of phrases at their discretion. I commend Warner Bros. for making accessible this work by one of the most significant figures in 20th-century percussion music. - John R. Raush, April 2000[1]
