Memories of the Seashore
Wind in the Bamboo Grove
Little Windows
Ancient Vase
Variations on Japanese Children Songs

Annotation

Written in the same style and feel of Variations on Japanese Children’s Songs and Dream of the Cherry Blossoms. This piece is a fast-paced ride, programmatically simulating a person looking out the window of a moving vehicle, and watching all the events and buildings go by. The piece features a theme that is prominent in the beginning and returns often, as different ideas come and go throughout the piece. Ostinatos are established and, as in her other works, it is important that the melodic lines, whether they are linear or double stopped, must be expressed over the ostinato. As the piece reaches its end, it begins to take on the same feel as Wind in the Bamboo Grove, as the performer plays the theme in the higher octave, and pushes the performer to play octave double stops vigorously in both hands, before an abrupt ending. The composer can be heard performing the piece on her CD: Marimba Fantasy. This piece is published in a collection titled: Keiko Abe: Works for Marimba, and is published by the Yamaha Music Foundation-Schott. - Trevor Landreth (05/10/18)
