Program Notes
Review
This easy/intermediate quintet is scored for snare drum, tenor drum, hand cymbals, bass drum and two timpani. The snare drum part includes a few ruffs. The tenor drum part is mostly quarter and 8th notes. The cymbal part requires some damping technique as well as a grasp of the different playing techniques relative to dynamic levels. The bass drum part includes only quarter and 8th notes. The timpani part includes only quarter and 8th notes with no tuning changes. The meter is 2/4 at a tempo of quarter = 132. Dynamics, accents and mallet indications are clearly marked in both score and parts. Dynamics range from ppp to fff. Dynamic control would seem to be the main challenge in this piece for the inexperienced intermediate player. This piece is suitable as an introductory ensemble for beginning/intermediate percussionists with limited technical and musical experience. - John Baldwin[1]
