Program Notes
Review
This is a quartet for four multiple percussion players each performing on a combination of drums and metallic instruments. Drums employed include bongos, tom-toms, Roto-toms, timpani and bass drum. Metallic instruments include cowbells, triangle, brake drums, almglocken and three Chinese cymbals. Player 5 also performs on five temple blocks. The subtitle of the work is "Groovy Patterns of Five," which explains the numerous five-note groupings or patterns found throughout the work. There are many meter changes (some not common), so mature understanding of rhythm and pulse is a must for successful performance. This 9- minute ensemble presents excellent contrasts in dynamics and expression, and the composer also makes silence a part of the texture. This is a work that should challenge and benefit the college ensemble - George Frock, October 1999[1]
