Instrumentation

3 Woodblock 3 Chinese Tom toms Marimba

Program Notes

This piece is a multi percussion piece that requires three low wood blocks (with relatively high, medium and low pitch), three Chinese drums and a marimba that contains the range of C3 to C6. The player needs to use four medium to hard marimba mallets throughout the piece. It is the second in a set of three. Martin Westlake stated that it was written for one of his student who was looking for a marimba piece that also used a few other percussion instruments. The composer also thinks that the tom toms and wood blocks are an ‘extension’ of the marimba. This piece is a single movement piece that starts with a marimba motive with simple expression. After that, the wood blocks and drums come in at different times with more character. This piece contains lots of time signature changes (2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 3/8, 6/8, 9/8). After the marimba motive reappears with a chromatic note lower, the piece change to the L’istesso tempo. At last, the piece ends with the same marimba motive as the beginning.
