Review

A title can be deceiving. At first glance, Geary Larrick's "Quintet for Drumline" suggests a composition for marching battery. Actually this is very close to the composer's intentions. "Quintet" is written for "outdoor instruments brought indoors." This work of three movements uses "traditional instrumentation of rudimental drum quintets" written in the earlier part of this century. Although Larrick does not cite any examples of historical inspiration for "Quintet", I assume he refers to traditional marching percussion batteries that were popular in military bands. "Quintet" is scored for three snare drums (field drum, concert drum, and dance drum) with bass drum and cymbals. The three movements offer a 6/8 march, 4/4 Adagio, and 3/4 maestoso. The entire work is fairly straight forward in rhythmic complexity with most of the contrast achieved with dynamics, accents, and timbre changes in the snare drums. Surprisingly the composer does not incorporate grace notes (rams, ruffs, etc.) or stickings that mights associated with a rudimental selection. For a number of reasons this composition misses the mark in relation to traditional drumlines. However "QulnteV" would be suitable for any high school or intermediate college percussion ensemble. Each movement is well thought out and younger students would enjoy preparing and performing the work. -Mark Ford, Summer 1988[1]
