A Lyndhurst, New Jersey native, principal timpanist James (Jim) Rago has been a member of the Louisville Orchestra since 1967. Rago attended the Juilliard School of Music where he studied percussion under Saul Goodman and other teachers including Anthony Cirone.

In his free time, Rago enjoys oil painting and listening to his favorite musical artist, jazz drummer Buddy Rich. To Rago, the most interesting aspect of being a musician is making music for an appreciating audience. His advice for young musicians is “if you truly love music and your instrument, stick with it – be patient – work at it – and you will find your place.”[1]
