Six Ideas for Snare, Bass, and Cymbal
Multiple Percussion: snare drum, bass drum with pedal, cymbals of your choice
This composition consists of six short pieces of varying style and character, ranging from rock to rudimental to jazz to abstract.
Hollinden's six "ideas" are framed in the context of six brief movements. These can be used as etude material for the advanced high school or college level player, or used, in toto or in part, on college percussion recitals.
Within the course of the six movements, Hollinden explores a wide range of possibilities afforded by the three instruments at hand, using them in various combinations, in dialog fashion, manipulating various beating spots, and even in a context reminiscent of their function in a drum-set setting. In all movements, however, an advanced degree of hand-foot coordination is required, as bass drum functions as a melodic participant in the contrapuntal lines. Multimetric writing is used throughout the work.
Hollinden is to be congratulated. Rather than using a large outlay of instruments to present limited musical ideas, he had the ability to exploit the limitless possibilities afforded by a very limited instrumentation. This is the mark of a good composer.
