Performance Note

  • If Students use mallet instruments other than orchestral bells, half notes, dotted half notes and whole notes can be rolled.
  • If orchestral bells are used as a substitute for xylophone or marimba, have students remove any rolls.
  • Help students select appropriate mallets for the style of each selection. Experiment to find which mallets sound best.
  • Because some performance music students encounter may not include "let ring" ties, encourage them to use their musical judgment as to when to dampen or not.
  • Advise students to exaggerate their dynamics and accents to help convey the emotion of the music
  • Encourage students to listen critically as they rehearse and perform their music. They should listen for the tone they are producing on each instrument, as well as how their part fits into the overall ensemble rhythmically and musically.[1]
