Program Notes

commission: William Moersch; premiere: 21 May 1984, Merkin Concert Hall, New York, William Moersch, soloist (The work is based on material from two earlier Bazelon scores: Partnership (1980) and Imprints (1978))

This is a very difficult four mallet solo which requires a marimba with a low F. The solo, which is in four movements, takes 10 minutes according to the performance guidelines. Suite for Marimba is dedicated to marimba artist, William Moersch, who commissioned the work. Each movement includes independence of the hands, not only technically, but also rhythmically, Although each movement is written in standard meters and notation, the complex rhythms and use of “rapid bursts" within beats gives a free feeling to parts of the music. The editing has been carefully prepared to avoid page turns, and the notation is very clear. This solo is certainly worthy of consideration for the advanced solo recital. William Moersch is to commended for commissioning new and quality literature for our profession.
