Review

Originally published in 1965, Suite for Percussion is a quartet in four short movements. The first movement uses membranophones (snare, field, and bass drums, and timpani); the second features wooden timbres provided by woodblock, temple blocks and drumsticks played in the manner of claves; the third movement exploits metallic sounds of cymbals, bells and triangle. All instruments are combined in the final movement, with each player handling a small instrumental setup. Pedagogically, the concept of this piece is sound. It focuses on the timbral characteristics of the instruments utilized and provides an introduction to multi-percussion performance.
