Overview

Cirone, Anthony J., Neil Grover and Garwood Whaley. The Art of Percussion Playing. Galesville, MD: Meredith Music;, 2006.

This book starts out with the tambourine. It gives a list of wind ensemble and orchestra pieces that require tambourine. Then it gives a brief history of the tambourine, what to look for when buying one, and performance techniques. It also includes how to do shake rolls, thumb rolls, grace notes, and playing with the fist or knee. There are playing examples to do these techniques as well. The triangle, bass drum, and cymbals are similarly explained in this format. After, there are 17 percussion accessory instruments (claves, temple blocks, woodblocks, ratchet, tam-tam, guiro, etc.) that give a brief background of the instrument, what to look for when wanting to purchase, and playing examples. This book also includes pictures of each instrument and how to hold or play it.

Reviews

Review by Ashley Feist: I think this book is very helpful. A beginning percussionist could learn the basics of these instruments. I think it goes into enough detail most of the time, but the reader might have a few questions to better understand something. A weakness is that it never talks about the snare drum which is a very important part of percussion. I think this book is helpful, but not better than Gary Cook’s book. Rating: IV

Each new section in the book gives an example of repertoire that the instruments are known for, both for wind ensemble and symphony orchestra. It then gives the instrument name in English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish. It then gives descriptions over the history of the instrument, how to select the proper instrument to use for different pieces, and performing with the instruments. If the instrument requires other kinds of treatment (such as preservation, accessories to hold or play the instrument, etc.) there will be a section covering all techniques for the instrument listed. In the bass drum section and cymbal section, tuning o fthe bass drum is covered as well as several different ways to play the crash cymbals, including orchestral ways in literature that composers over the years have written, where they have a certain style in mind. This book however does not include any photographs of the instruments or other equipment listed, all of the examples are hand-drawn. -Trevor Landreth; Emporia State University
