Description

Holst's The Planets is one of the most beloved pieces of classical music ever written - a suite of tone poems written a century ago about the planets in our solar system (astrologically). Scott Weatherson has arranged four of these poems in two volumes for percussion ensemble. This second volume contains the most famous poem of the suite, the mechanically militaristic Mars, the Bringer of War, as well as the mischievous and eclectic Uranus, the Magician. The characters of these movements fit percussion well. All of the keyboard parts only require 2-mallet playing. The single timpani part is an amalgamation of the orchestral original's two parts, altered to fit on five drums.
