Description

Tympanum is a composition for solo timpanist with a fairly extensive percussion ensemble. The melodic instruments predominate, while the untuned instruments have a purely accompanying character. The work begins with a rhythmic structure based on a threatening character. After this, the harmonic structure is exhibited by the mallets with the soloist playing a melodic theme. Rhythmically the work offers many different characters, from swinging to rustic. The middle section is quiet in design, in which the timpanist performs complete melodies in tight rhythmic patterns, which are first played by the mallets. The ending is very technical, with many rhythmic shades, creating a battle between vibraphone and timpani. The total instrumentation is increasingly expanded towards the end, resulting in a spectacular end. After this, calm returns, while the ending indicates that both parties have come to peace.
