Description

Vita was written on behalf of the World Music Competition Foundation in Kerkrade (WMC) and the Netherlands Institute for Wind Music, on the occasion of the 13th WMC in 1997. A revised version was written in 2023 on behalf of the Vrienzenveense Harmonie led by Niek KleinJan. Vita means: Life. The work begins with a theme in a minor key. This theme depicts sadness with a hint of hope, and is the common thread throughout the composition. It is interspersed with various other themes that have to do with 'life', and the subtitle: life goes on. Sad memories fade, but return again and again. At the beginning of the composition the main theme returns regularly, however, life goes on. By the end of the composition, this main theme has virtually disappeared. Various themes alternate, themes that have to do with the interesting and also turbulent life. Just before the end, the main theme returns briefly, as a sign that, although memories fade, they always remain present.
