Yuyama studied at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (東京藝術大学Gei-jutsu Tōkyō Daigaku) in Tokyo , now: Tokyo University of the Arts in Tomojiro Ikenouchi ( composition ). He won the 1st prize in a composition competition organized by the Japanese public broadcaster Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK) and the Mainichi Newspapers Co. In 1954 he won 2nd Prize for his String Quartet in the same league. After receiving his diploma, he worked as a freelance composer. He writes works of different genres. Yuyama is a member of the board of the Japanese copyright society.
