Program Notes

This collection of ten solos for snare drum is designed for the solo contest. Each of the solos has been written with attention to phrasing, dynamic contrast, accents, and the various snare technique families. The solos are cleverly named in baseball terms with such titles as "Spring Training," "Top of the 5th," "Drag Bunt," and "Extra Innings." The solos are designed in four-bar phrases and the performance notes suggest that they should be performed with the phrases in mind. The print is clear and is easy to read, and each solo is presented on two pages, thus avoiding page turns. This collection should be fun for advanced high school students, and appropriate for school contest events. - George Frock^[1]

These expressive solos cover a variety of meters and moods, and are filled with dynamic contrasts as well as interesting rhythmic material.
