Description

This is a collection of mostly African tunes and a few contemporary pieces informed by traditional African music arranged for marimba ensemble of seven marimbas from the small soprano to the big bass which one needs to stand on a one and one-half foot riser to play. Much of the music comes from the mbira (thumb piano) music of the Shona people, the majority tribe of Zimbabwe, but there are also pieces from the Zulu and Chopi peoples of southern Africa, the contemporary popular music of southern Africa, pieces from the African Christian tradition, as well as some pieces composed by musicians in the United States. The pieces are appropriate for marimba ensembles of (usually) seven marimbas, and are written in the keys of C, G, and Am. They can be played on Western orchestral chromatic marimbas or the traditional African diatonic marimbas. Schools with Orff marimbas use the pieces as do other school programs with access to marimbas.
