Program Notes

Auroras is a 5-movement work for solo glockenspiel & electronics representing some of the breathtaking colors seen in these rare phenomena and are depicted by various textures, moods, and harmonic languages or structures that have always spoken to the composer personally as feeling/sounding celestial.

Performance Notes

The optional audio tracks represent the black of space seen behind each magnificent Aurora. They are admittedly simple in composition and should never overpower the solo, but will certainly enhance any performance greatly should the technology be available. Each track is initiated prior to the beginning of movements 1, 3, and 5, but during movements 2 and 4 as indicated. Though nothing needs to be “aligned” vertically throughout, being near the indicated tempo of each movement will certainly elevate the perceived cohesion of the audio track and solo part. As a general rule for movements 1, 3, and 5: wait 5 seconds after initiating a track before beginning to play. No single performance would and should be the same, so embrace this spontaneity and have fun exploring the possible variations you can create between the solo and audio.
