Program Notes

Azureus is a jazz waltz inspired by my wife’s roses garden! The piece follows an AABACA form that serves as the basic structure for the improvised solos. After the solos, the main theme is repeated and followed by a short improvised coda over a bass line ostinato. The piece is features on my new 2014 CD project Marimjazzia. The piece is written in the key of A major but it does explore other tonalities such as C, A-flat and F. The use of jazz harmonies, scales, and melodic patterns give this piece a different sound and feel from the traditional solo marimba repertoire.
