Lucas currently studies composition with Eric Guinivan, and his prior mentors include Adam Gorb, Paul Patterson, Greg Danner and Jonathan McNair.
Lucas's works are mostly carried by a self-published brand, Lucas Garner Publications, which promotes the works of other composers in addition to the professional engraving of his own works. Lucas's other published works are carried by C. Alan Publications in Greensboro, North Carolina, including "Lightbringers", a percussion sextet work that was named a 3rd prize winner of Lee University’s 2014 Percussion Ensemble Composition Contest. Other compositions by Lucas have been performed by the Tennessee Tech University Chamber Wind Ensemble, the Royal Northern College of Music Brand New Orchestra, the Chattanooga Youth Symphony Orchestra (where the concert was devoted to a focus of his music), and more across the United States and Europe. Lucas has participated in additional composition studies with Christopher Adler, Matthew Burtner, Steve Gisby, John Mackey, Paul Lansky, Ivan Trevino and more in masterclasses and private study.
As a conductor, Lucas's studies began with former Atlanta Ballet Orchestra conductor Dan Allcott. Under his guidance, Lucas started the Tennessee Tech University Chamber Wind Ensemble for the performance of his new works, and after a year of direction by Eric Harris, took the lead as music director for the premiere of his large scale saxophone concerto, "Odysseus". Since that time, Lucas has conducted works by American and British composers in performance as well as more of his own works with ensembles like the Chattanooga Youth Symphony Orchestra.
