Nocturne is a percussion sextet with each part consisting of eleven rhythmic cells. The piece is aleatoric in that the players determine the duration of each cell repetition, the order of the cells, and the specific dynamic changes The specific pitches and rhythms have been predetermined by the composer. The combination of rototoms, brake drums, bongos, xylophone bars, cow bells and slit drums is meant to be reminiscent of "peepers and certain insects in the nocturnal soundscape of New England." The aleatoric design of the work "reflects the ever evolving variation and developmental potential found in the natural setting." While certainly accessible technically at the high school level, the compositional concept and the proper musical interpretation would probably be more feasible at the university level. - John Baldwin, Spring 1989<ref>[http://www.pas.org/Learn/compresearch.aspx PAS.ORG] Retrieved 06/03/2012</ref>
