Description

Reach by John Herndon follows suit with his earlier compositions Begin Transmission and Again and is expertly tailored for new percussionists and/or programs that are new to percussion ensembles. It is scored primarily for pitched instruments as well as snare drum, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion. Playable with as few as two players on a single marimba to as many as 11 or more, John Herndon offers a host of suggested player configurations based on available personnel and instrumentation, making the piece extremely adaptable to any program.

Program Notes

Reach was crafted specifically for new percussionists and programs that are new to percussion ensemble. To that end, I worked carefully to make the musical content accessible and the ensemble requirements flexible. The parts all fall into one of the three categories:
1. Melody (Glockenspiel, Xylophone, Marimba 1): This part contains quarter and eighth notes rhythms only and mostly stepwise melodic motion. There are lots of repeated phrases with time to prepare for variations.
2. Harmony (Chimes, Vibraphone, Marimba 2, Timpani): This part contains whole, half, quarter and eighth notes rhythms and mostly repeated pitchs establishing harmony. There are lots of time to prepare for pitch leaps.
3. Percussion (Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Hand Cymbals, Triangle
