Performance Notes

Although Scojo Madness features several snare drum, timbales and conga solos, additional solos can be performed by the drum set and bongo player by simply repeating any solo sections. Additionally, solos can be longer as desired by the soloist and cued out by signaling the next section of music. The bongo player uses a bongo bell and performs the “bongo-bell” pattern as indicated in the music. The drum set player plays the “bell” of the cymbal where indicated in the music. During the “groove” sections, the timbale player plays cascara with the right hand and clave pattern in the left hand. In other groove sections, the timbales player plays the timbales bell pattern in the right hand while playing the claves pattern in the left hand. The solos can be altered to fit the technical demands of the performers. In other words, the performer can change what is written to fit their performance needs. During the snare drum “groove section” (non-solo part), the right hand plays on the edge or rim of the drum. Although there is an actual pattern written for the left hand, the performer can vary it slightly as long as it does not get in the way of what the drum set player is doing. The stage set-up is left to the discretion of the performers. However, since this piece is unique in that it features a rudimental snare drum (not typically found in this instrumentation/style), the snare drum should be in front of the ensemble.
