Program Notes

Review

These two books are "part of a series of percussion books for young musicians ... designed to bring students together, in a classroom situation, to perform simple pieces on percussion instruments." The books contain the same material-the conductor's book presents the ensembles in score form, while the part book has each ensemble's four parts printed out separately on facing pages. Standard instruments are used, including timpani and drums, cymbals, small concert percussions and keyboard percussion instruments. Each quartet contains challenging musical ideas and Italian musical terms. The relatively simple rhythmic ideas will allow for more concentration on the development of technical skills on the various instruments, as well as the development of ensemble performance skills. No explanatory material is included in these two books. Strongly recommended for use by beginning percussion ensembles at the junior high and high school levels, and especially for culminating performance material for college/ university percussion methods courses. - John Baldwin, February 1993[1]
